CreativeJS - Creative Coding within the Browser w/ Seb Lee-Delisle.

Thanks to recent developments in HTML and JavaScript, it’s now possible to create a wide range of visual effects using native browser capabilities. This workshop is intended for people who are used to working with Processing, C++ or any other language, and want to see how their existing code skills can be transferred into JavaScript. We’ll be working through the best parts of my CreativeJS workshops (seb.ly/training) taking you through animation, simple physics, optimization, targeting mobile devices, and much more.

Participants will need their own laptops, and will be expected to have working knowledge of JavaScript and basic HTML5 elements like Canvas. Please come to the workshop with DAT.GUI downloaded.

An Introduction to Signal Processing for Creative Technologists w/ Golan Levin and Kyle McDonald

Many new-media projects must make sense from noisy signals, such as real-time sensor data, internet traffic, histograms, timelines, and other audiovisual streams. Although "high-level understanding" techniques (such as speech-to-text or face analysis) remain active areas for expert research, there exist a slew of powerful "low-level" heuristics that can extract interesting and useful information from signals in much simpler ways. This workshop will present an overview of these techniques -- supported by intuitive, visually-oriented examples and code fragments written for popular arts-engineering toolkits -- that cuts through technical jargon to focus on what's really useful for artists and designers.

Of course, in case you like jargon, then you'll want to know that the workshop will present a smorgasbord of useful artistic tools, such as de-nonlinearization, contrast enhancement, periodicity detection, noise removal, convolution filtering, curve-fitting, statistical measures of central tendency, distribution characterization, and frequency-domain analysis of 1D and 2D signals.

Attendees should have a laptop with Processing v.2.0a4 or better installed, and bring a mini LED flashlight.

Intermediate openFrameworks- 007 and Beyond w/ Joshua Noble

The new release of openFrameworks, 007, introduced a wealth of new functionality and a redesign of some of the core functionality. This workshop will dig deeper into OF and into those new features, looking at what's new in OF and what that enables us to do faster and more effectively, especially the new 3D and OpenGL features added in oF. This workshop will also introduce some of my favorite addons that extend the capabilities of oF and talk of some of my favorite new developments in the oF ecosystem. More specifically we'll blaze through:

Going from Points to Lines to Meshes. Making your OpenGL life easier with FBOs and VBOs. Using GLSL in openFrameworks. Smart Pointers and other ways to avoid memory leaks and crashes. How to dig into computer vision a little more deeply. Audio synthesis using Maximilian. Talking to anything over OSC, MIDI, UDP, HTTP, and Serial. Running OF pretty much anywhere (Mobile Devices and ARM platforms).

Archive, Text, and Character(s) w/ Jer Thorp and Mark Hansen

In this 3-hour workshop, we’ll see how text can operate as a unique substrate for creative exploration. Using selected corners of the NewYork Times’ extensive archive as examples, we’ll explore techniques to parse, analyze, and visualize huge bodies of text. Attendees will learn how simple (and even some not-so-simple) statistical methods can be combined with exploratory visualization strategies to find patterns of language within and between separate texts. More than that, participants will learn how computational methods can reveal the unique character of text.

Attendees will need their own laptop, with Processing 2.0 and Python installed. Participants will receive small thought-provoking assignments, along with instructions for preparation, in the weeks leading up to the workshop.

JavaScript Tols for HTML5 Artists w/ the Google Data Arts Team and Aaron Koblin

This workshop is an overview of three JavaScript tools that the Google Data Arts Team uses on a regular basis: dat.GUI (a GUI for changing variables), three.js (a 3D engine), and stats.js (a performance widget). Check them out at Workshop.ChromeExperiments.com. An intermediate knowledge of JavaScript and HTML5 is required for this workshop. You can find these tools on the site or on the Eyeo thumb drive.

Intermediate Computer Vision with openFrameworks w/ Kyle McDonald and Golan Levin

For the past few decades researchers have been slaving away on advanced mathematics and computer science to help computers see the world the way humans do. These techniques regularly find their way into interactive artwork and installations: blob detection, face tracking, foreground/ background segmentation. The OpenCV library is a massive collaborative effort to implement and connect these different computer vision techniques. Programming with only OpenCV can be intimidating, while openFrameworks' ofxOpenCv only exposes a few technique from OpenCV. So this workshop will introduce a new addon for openFrameworks that makes it easier to use everything from the simplest OpenCV functions to most bleeding edge algorithms. We will cover techniques including background learning, camera calibration, optical flow, contour detection and tracking, basic face tracking and advanced expression analysis.

Experience with openFrameworks is assumed. Attendees should bring a laptop with the latest build of [openFrameworks](http://www.openframeworks.cc/download/), and an up-to-date clone of [ofxCv](https://github.com/kylemcdonald/ofxCv). The workshop will cater to OSX, while Windows users should be running Code::Blocks. Linux users will be expected to answer everyone else's questions.

Drawing + Code w/ Shantell Martin and Zach Lieberman

This workshop will investigate the curious space where drawing and computation meet.  From the earliest moments of the computer — Douglas Englebart’s mouse,  Ivan Sutherland’s sketchpad — developers have been striving for intuitive and meaningful ways to capture and explore gesture digitally. Likewise artists – From Durer’s drawing machine, to Sol Lewitt’s infinite cubes and Moholy Nagy’s imaginary structures –have used computational method to transfer reality on to the paper and generatively reproduce elements of their drawing. In this workshop we will examine the fundamentals and challenges of mixing computation and drawing, in order to create a new realm of possibilities. We'll would cover building drawing tools and using them for creative exploration and performance.

The Nature of Code w/ Dan Shiffman.

Can we capture the unpredictable evolutionary and emergent properties of nature in software? Can understanding the mathematical principles behind our physical world world help us to create digital worlds? This workshop will focus on the programming strategies and techniques behind computer simulations of natural systems. We’ll walk through the examples from the "Nature of Code book" and explore topics ranging from basic physics to more advanced simulations of complex systems. Examples will be demonstrated using Processing with a focus on object oriented programming.

Attendees should have basic programming experience, including object-oriented programming (with Processing or equivalent). Attendees should have a laptop with Processing v.2.0a4 or better installed.
